This coffee place will clear go down as my personal favorite for a long time to come. While I was fully aware of a fast brewing fourth wave of coffee culture in Nordic cities like Copenhagen & Stockholm, the industrial city of Malmö, Sweden on the other side of Copenhagen across Øresund Bridge threw in a super pleasant surprise.
What you get at Nordic Style Coffee is a curated experience of Specialty Coffees in a 2000 Sq.Ft of area. The design is obviously Scandinavian – clean lines with simplicity, minimalism and functionality with a color palette accentuating earthy woods along with monochromes. The SCA (Specialty Coffee Association) Flavor Wheel renders hues of colors and shades to the café interior, while the opposite wall adorns a huge map of Nordics.
I take this moment to explain about the difference between Scandinavian and Nordic as most people including me use it interchangeably. Geographically, the main difference between them is that Scandinavia refers to the three countries of Norway, Denmark, and Sweden, all of which are located on the Scandinavian peninsula, while the Nordic countries include these three countries as well as Finland and Iceland.
Who’s Nordic Style Coffee?
One would be wondering who’s behind this awesome coffee place. Turns out these are employees at Djäkne Startup Studio together with some coffee friends who started this recently. Nordic Style Coffee is their pet project. I chatted up with the founders – David Lomelino & Carl Triberg and they were extremely enthusiastic with this venture and took time to explain the concept behind this initiative.
They said “We missed a website like this where we could find roasters and coffee bars in the Nordics, and we also wanted to explore what the expression “Nordic style coffee” really means.
Exploring the Nordic style coffee arena
How many roasters are there in the Nordics? And how many of those roast Nordic style coffee? These questions motivated them to launch a project like this. They didn’t have the answers, and no one else seemed to know either…
The other big (!) reason is their own love for specialty coffee and the culture that surrounds it. Visiting new specialty coffee bars around the world, getting to know new roasters and baristas, learning and tasting, yes, it's an important part of their lives – and they know that there are so many more specialty coffee explorers like me out there!
Roastery: We are april, not the month!
“We believe that where you are matters, it shapes you as a person and a company. The location of april is not a coincidence. april is an extension of our interpretation of Copenhagen”.
Patrik Rolf, the founder of april Coffee Roaster is Silver Medalist in the 2019 World Brewers Cup in Boston and a finalist in the World Barista Championship 2022 in Melbourne. This makes him one of a handful professionals in the world that has been in the final of both competitions.
About the coffee
This lot has been fully washed processed, with a total duration of wet fermentation between 24-36 hours before soaking in clean water for and additional 12-24 hours. The drying was undertaken using raised beds over the following 10-12 days. You can expect to find notes of candied citrus, with an excellent floral and clean finish.
