Zurich’s coffee culture has a long and impressive history leading back to the 17th century. Today, the Swiss are among the top consumers of coffee in the world, so it makes sense that there’s no shortage of coffee places in this beautiful country. It’s not true & you can go totally wrong here as Specialty Coffee culture is relatively new.
Coffee indeed is a social activity in Switzerland. Espresso based drinks are much more popular, including ‘caffe crema’, a type of espresso drink similar to an Americano that probably originated in Switzerland near their Italian border.
In this city, which is now bustling with exceptional coffeeshops, MAME Coffee stands head and shoulders above the rest setting new standards.
MAME, which means beans in Japanese was founded in 2016 by two self-proclaimed coffee lovers Emi Fukahori from Japan and Mathieu Theis from France. Mathieu came to Switzerland workwise. When he got tired of his job, he took a break and that’s when he first discovered specialty coffee. Emi, who is a Business Partner who later became a Life Partner worked in the tourism sector promoting Switzerland as the go-to destination when she discovered her love for specialty coffee.
Both Emi and Mathieu had the chance to taste incredible coffees while competing in the national and world barista championships. At MAME they wanted to make these coffees accessible for their guests because, as Mathieu says it, “There is no reason not to do it!”.
The shop roasts its own beans, offering a wide range of flavours from floral to umami. Each coffee has its own unique roast profile tailored to the preferences of every customer, fulfilling MAME’s motto, “the best coffee is the coffee you like.”
Check out my coffee friend ’s recent coffeelogue as well!
MAME Seefeld cafe was inaugurated in June 2018 and became the first coffee shop in Switzerland to be brewing filter coffee exclusively with the GINA coffee maker for better consistency. GINA coffee gear is so gorgeous you can’t take your eyes off it!
Besides the coffee, my favourite part about MAME is the “Flavour Wheel” on the wall that displays different flavour profiles matched with currently available coffees.
What makes MAME successful, apart from their Swiss perfectionism that flows into every detail, is the fact that it provides an incredible customer experience.
Flowery, chocolatey or fruity? When you order a coffee at Mame, you’ll not only be asked what cup size, but also what flavour you prefer.
When you order a coffee, you have to choose the cup size and type of milk. But that’s not all – you also have to select a coffee from the six to ten different varieties on offer. Their flavours range from chocolatey to fruity to floral.
Co-Founder Emi always asks three questions: ‘Do you like your coffee hot or cold? With or without milk? And what kind of flavour?’ Aren’t her customers overwhelmed by all these questions? ‘There are more and more coffee connoisseurs like Emi who see and celebrate coffee as a luxury rather than simply consuming it’.
